The Institute wishes to recognize the following individuals that have made a significant contribution to the profession of planning and its development in Kenya

Prof. A. Subakrishna
Prof. A. Subakrishna started the premiere planning school in Kenya, the University of Nairobi’s Department of Urban and Regional Planning (DURP). He served as its first chair between 1971 and 1982

Zack Maleche
Planner Zach Maleche is considered the de-facto father and guru of planning in Kenya. The exuberant professor of planning served as the DURP’s chair between 1982 and 1990 and is responsible, together with a few others, for training the majority of planners in the Country. Zack was, up until his demise in July 2017, a Fellow of KIP

Peter Kibinda
Planner Peter Kibinda is a planner with a long and illustrious career as a public sector planner, having served in various capacities at the defunct Nairobi City Council, and the Ministry of Nairobi Metropolitan Development. Planner Kibinda is responsible for nurturing the profession of planning in Kenya, both as a long-serving chair of the Town Planning Chapter of the Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK-TPC), and one of the founding fathers and interim chair during KIP’s formative years. He is both a fellow of the AAK and KIP

Bosire Ogero
Planner Bosire Ogero is one of KIP’s founding fathers and served as its chairman for seven years. He has the longest career as a private planning practitioner and served as CEO of Matrix Development Consultants. He is also a former chairman board of the National Housing Corporation and former vice president of the Commonwealth Association of Planners. Bosire was, up until his demise in December 2016, a Fellow of KIP

Elijah Agevi
Planner Elijah Agevi’s famous phrase “the Struggle Continues” betrays his identity as an activist-planner that championed the course of planning paradigms responsive to informal settlements and the less privileged urban dwellers. Agevi was a member of the NGO Council Executive Committee, and led one of the Council networks’ Shelter Forum, and a Governing Council member of the Kenya Association of Resident Associations (KARA). He was also a planning practitioner and CEO at Research Triangle Africa. Agevi was, up until his demise in January 2016, a Fellow of KIP.

Andrew Ligale
Planner Andrew Ndooli Ligale is a pioneer of public sector planning in Kenya, having served as the first African Director of Physical Planning in the Ministry of Land & Settlement between 1966 and 1978. He served as permanent secretary in various ministries in the period 1979-1991. Ligale is also one of the few planners with a distinguished political career, having served as Member of Parliament for Vihiga constituency in the period 1992-1997, and 2003-2007. He also served as chair of the Consolidate Bank in the period 1997-2002, and chair of the defunct Interim Independent Boundaries Review Commission of Kenya or IIBRC in the period 2009-2011
